Finding my place-Hispanic Heritage Month

It’s hard to know where you belong when you were born in one place but have lived almost the same amount of years somewhere else. I love my island. I am proud to say I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. When I moved to New York it was so hard because I had no one and didn’t feel like I fit in. Never in a million year did I think I would stay here after college and start my family in this big city.

The hardest thing about not feeling where I belong is trying to pass my heritage and my culture to my kids. I want to be able to teach my kids about where I come from so that they can be proud of their Hispanic heritage. At first this didn’t seem so important to me, because in my head, they were born in NY so that makes them New Yorkers. In reality they are the children of an immigrant. A woman who came as a teenager to better her education and grow professionally. I want them to be proud of that. To understand why I don’t like sleepover, or why is important to ask for “La Bendición” every night.
