Exhibición de Mythbusters en el Liberty Science Center

Published by:

TheMommyElf-Mythbusters

Una noche en Broadway- Reseña School of Rock The Musical

Published by:

School of Rock, The Mommy Elf

School of Rock, The Mommy Elf

Mi hijo quedó maravillado con la música, especialmente el número del final, Stick it to the Man.

School of Rock, The Mommy Elf

. Los boletos se pueden adquirir aquí.

Para esta reseña nos ¡Gracias a School of Rock The Musical por la noche inolvidable!

Fairy Tales Hair Care is the answer this summer

Published by:

Thank you to Momtrends and Fairy Tales for sponsoring this post.

Every summer we have the same problems. Too much time in the sun, to many mosquitos, to many long days, fights for baths and endless splashing around. As a semi over protective mom, I always try to keep what I put on my kids as natural as possible, especially since dealing with cancer, so I get extremely excited when I get to review and try products that are safe for kids and also effective, enter Fairy Tales Hair Care. I have to admit I wasn’t familiar and up to know we’ve been using another brand for shampoo and conditioner so I figured it’d be awesome to try something new.

Fairy Tales

I was sent a box with the shampoo, conditioner, and the after-sun spray, bug spray and a lice repellent spray. Why did I get excited when I saw the products? Well for starters the packaging is so cute, I saw a castle and it took me back to my happy place, and second the shampoo and conditioner and after swim spray were from the Sun & Swim collection. How perfect!? I read the packaging and there are no parabens or sulfates or harsh chemicals, this made me even more excited to try them. It had never crossed my mind that I had to protect their hair during the summer but it’s so true, we definitely do. We protect our skin and our eyes so hair should also be taken care off. Especially after days at the pool and those chemicals, the salty beach water, or just playing outside.

What we do all summer!

What we do all summer!

So on Memorial Day, I decided to try the shampoo since we had been out all day at the park. I was very surprised. It didn’t create a ton of lather, but it smelled so good and I felt the difference in my kid’s hair and their curls were as bouncy as ever. The conditioner also smelled amazing and so did the spray. Even their names put me in a good mood, hello Coco Cabana, makes me think of a white sandy beach and a piña colada (moms can dream while giving kids a bath). I didn’t looove the After-Sun Spray, it felt a little dry, almost like a texturizing spray. We’re going to try it again this weekend, and see how it goes.

Fairy Tales

Moving on to the bug spray, Bug Bandit, I have to say it was pretty effective, which was incredibly surprising, because it’s deet free, which is a chemical I try to stay away from without any success. My kids are so sweet for mosquitos that we have to use deep woods deet to not get bitten as much, because they still get bitten anyways. The scent is amazing, at least for me because I LOVE essential oils and this smells like eucalyptus, which is one of my favorite oils EVER. I sprayed it all over and felt safe putting it on their face. Usually I use my own mix of essential oils, but I have to say this is a really good alternative and easier to take with us wherever we go. I also liked that it didn’t feel sticky, and this is important considering the amount of things we have to put on our kids skin during the summer (lotion, sunscreen, bug spray).

fairytales4

The last product is the lice spray. Ok, so a lot of people don’t know that last summer we had lice. It’s a long story and I promise I will give you all the details on that, so after that experience, anything that helps keep those darn bugs off our heads I’m a fan off. What I like about the spray is that you can just spray it on their clothes and their hair and its extra protection. My kids don’t go to summer camp, but this is definitely a must for campers (think about sharing pillows and sweatshirts!). Again, this is another product that just makes life easier without cutting effectiveness. We have a bottle with water and tea tree oil that I spray on my son every morning before school, but the truth is that it smells gross, so he hates it. With this, he doesn’t mind the scent and it makes me more comfortable sending him to school.

I enjoyed these products and will probably be regulars in our home. Just the smells make me happy and the effectiveness really impressed me. Price wise, they are pretty comparable to the other chemical, toxin free products in the market with prices ranging from $10.95 for the shampoo to $12.95 for the lice repellent. Oh and also if you are dealing with lice, they have an awesome kit to get rid of them, with a comb that has the best grip of any lice comb out there. You can check out their whole line of products on their website. If you want a list of all the things that are essential for summers with kids, check out post, of course Bug Bandit is on the list!

Cantícos: Los Pollitos

Published by:

Living in NYC, kids are so exposed to culture. Aside from that, my children like many others are mixed, so culture and languages are part of our daily norm. I’ve been accused of harming my children by not teaching them Spanish. Is not that I don’t want to. It’s just very hard. definitely not as easy as everyone thinks, especially if you feel better speaking English yourself.

lospollitos4

But lately the guilt is getting to me and I’ve been putting a bit more effort into trying to make them at least understand Spanish. Needless to say I will take any help I can get, so I loved it when I was asked to review Canticos: Los Pollitos Book. This book is very special. It has the story in English but also has the translation in Spanish. Not only that, there is also an app.

lospollitos3

The book is a board book so is perfect for all little kids. I also liked that it was interactive. Grace loved opening the flaps to discover the rest of the story. She also liked the shape of the book. It flips from one side in English to one side in Spanish. I read it to her in a singing voice and she was just so excited. Especially because I did it in one language first and then in the other one.

lospollitos1

This book is for sure a regular in our home now. It’s also one of those books that you want to hold on to forever. It’s beautifully illustrated with bright colors and bold letters. But for me the dual language is just what makes it the best. It’s very hard to find books that are engaging to the kids that are bilingual and this books does exactly that. It engages the kids not only with the verses of the story but also with the flaps that open and close.

The book also works for any child who is trying to learn Spanish but also any child who is learning English. The book doesn’t need the app, but I think it’s awesome to have an app since children today are so comfortable with electronics. The app has an egg decorating game where they can practice shapes and colors, but what I like the most about the app is that it plays the chikies song in Spanish and my daughter absolutely loved it. She really liked the song and the best part is that we were reading the lyrics on the book at the same time.

Cantícos: Los Pollitos is just a MUST book for any parent raising bilingual children. If you want to buy the book, is available on Amazon.

Bright Star a new Broadway Hit!

Published by:

BRIGHT STAR, the new Broadway musical, currently in previews, is an absolute joy to be a part of. Steve Martin (Music, Book & Story), yes THAT Steve Martin- the Academy Award and Grammy Award winning performer co-wrote the music for this show with long-time collaborator Edie Brickell (Music, Lyrics & Story). Set in the South during two different time periods, one post WWII, and the other a generation earlier, the story is that of fiction, but is surely one that was based on events that happened over and over again in the very conservative region. The best way to view the show is to go in absolutely fresh, so there will not be any spoilers in this review.

The music, as written by Martin and Brickell, relies heavily on Southern style instruments: piano, accordion, violin, banjo, guitar, mandolin, viola, cello, fiddle and drums. The banjo really takes center stage in most of the proceeding and it is no surprise; that is unless you are unaware of the fact that Steve Martin is an accomplished banjoist! In fact, Martin and Brickell have thus far released two music albums together, the first of which, Love Has Come For You, won a Grammy in 2013 for Best American Roots Song and inspired the musical Bright Star. The entire score transports the audience away from the small, but comfortable i.e. good leg room, Cort Theatre, into an open-air makeshift amphitheatre that would be found in small Southern towns of yore. In fact there were more than a few times in which the audience wanted to jump up and add to the music with rhythmic clapping, and in a few instances we were invited to do so by the conductor.

Again, this review will remain spoiler free, so I will not discuss the plot, but I will gladly mention the superb acting. Performer CARMEN CUSACK, as the lead Alice Murphy, steals the show. Her voice is a marvel. She speaks and sings with a Southern twang that along with the music gives the entire show a feel of authenticity. She should absolutely be nominated for a Tony Award for her performance. The rest of the main cast, including A.J. SHIVELY, STEPHEN BOGARDUS, HANNAH ELLESS, MAX CHERNIN, SARAH JANE SHANKS, SANDRA DeNISE, JEFF BLUMENKRANTZ, EMILY PADGETT, PAUL ALEXANDER NOLAN and STEPHEN LEE ANDERSON more than hold their own and are all a joy to watch. The best thing about the acting and the actors is they are having fun and it translates on stage. All the performers are truly enjoying themselves and this just makes the show that much more engrossing.

The choreography is handled well. The stage is not huge. The band shares the stage with the performers, which in other circumstances might have meant a cramped space, but the director Walter Bobbie, cleverly handles the limited area by making the musicians mobile. In every scene the musicians are somewhere else, always visible, but always just out-of-the-way of the acting and dancing. The sets and props are simple, again adding to the atmosphere of the Old South. With a small stage this was the correct choice. The costumes are fun. Women wore colorful dresses and men wore suits in the Old South, and they do so again throughout the evening. The hairdo and wigs are also well designed. Finally, the train. There is a commuter train which plays a substantial role. It is not a PATH train or any commuter train we in the TriState Area are used to. It is an old style coal or wood powered train, complete with smoke trailing from its engine and it appears more than once. In fact one very important scene, just before intermission, occurs on the train. I will just say that director Bobbie was sly for coming up with an ingenious way to fit such a behemoth onto a small stage.

Bright Star is different many other musicals you will see. The music is not orchestral, in fact I could only see 6 or 7 musicians performing, but boy is it catchy and fun! There is no real memorable song, though there may be one you will ‘always, always, always’ want to sing along to. The performances and performers are superb. The story keeps ones interest throughout, especially when there is a twist, and then another twist in the plot. Before heading to the show I invited a cousin to join me, she could not. However, she informed me she had already seen the show two weeks prior. She did not want to talk about it other than to say it was funny and she loved it. Having seen it, I agree it is better to go in not knowing anything about the plot, it makes the denouement that much more enjoyable. However, even if someone does spoil it for you it will not take away from the sheer joy one gets from this literary jewel of a show.

The show is suitable for children; there is no swearing, no sex, no nudity or even violence. There is one quick scene that might disturb all ages, but it is dealt with care. The humor is clean and peppered throughout. Children under 9 might have a hard time following the plot, especially with the back and forth of time periods.

I was invited to the show as part of the media. All opinions are my own.

Stride Rite Sneaker Boot= The SNOOT!

Published by:

Stride Rite Sneaker BootThe Snoot! Comfort, style & protection! (3)

Kids like to be comfortable and as you know I am a huge fan of Stride Rite shoes for my kids. I was so happy when they introduced the “Snoot”. It’s a boot but it’s also a sneaker. And let’s face it, even though the groundhog predicted an early spring, we just got 3 inches of snow this weekend. So these are definitely needed in your kids wardrobe. At first glance, I really didn’t think we would get much used out of these, because I didn’t think they would provide enough protection against the snow. To my surprised my son LOVED them. Not only because they are Star Wars themed, but he said he was comfortable and he could run. He can’t really run in his big snow boots, so this was very important for him.

Stride Rite The Snoot Star Wars

The boot is soft on the shaft, and it’s fleeced lined, making it super soft. It also has an apex attachment so that you can adjust tightness for your child. To make it easier for the kids to put them on by themselves it also has pull tabs on both sides of the shaft. The bottom part of the shoe is just like the Made 2 Play line of shoes. It’s a tennis shoe so it’s not bulky or flat. And it has elastic, so no laces or zippers involved. It does have an extra apex strap in the bottom to adjust as well. I also like that like all Made 2 Play shoes these are machine washable! You can’t beat that! The kids can also wear them as a boot, or fold the top.

IMG_4577

When it comes to performance, we haven’t had any issues yet. My kids feet were dry, he was in the snow for a long time, and we also used them for the walk to school and didn’t really slip. So as far as an overall snow boot, these are pretty good. I tested them myself with my hand, although they don’t have a temperature they definitely kept his feet warm, while he played in the snow. I think the best thing about these sneaker boot is that he can wear them to school and they won’t bother him. A lot of kids wear their snow boots and when they get to school they have to change into their regular shoes. This is not only a pain for the kids and the teachers, but also for us parents who have to make sure to pack their extra shoes. With the sneaker boot, you don’t have to worry about any of that. They wear the same show all the way without compromising comfort or protection from the elements. We will definitely be using these in the spring as rain boots. There are the perfect all in one shoe for winter for any kids. If there is one thing that I hope they change is the amount of colors available. I wish they came up with more color combos and more characters. And they are a bit on the pricey side at $60 (for the bigger kids). Of course with Stride Rite you can always use coupons or wait until they have their awesome sales like buy one get one 40% and right now some of the snoots are on sale for half off, this is an awesome deal!

Healthy living with L’il Critters

Published by:

A while back we attended an event hosted by L’il Critters at the Central Park Zoo. I was familiar with the name but had no idea of what the company was. At the event we learned about the new products. Not only was it really cool to go to the Central Park Zoom because we love zoos, but it was really cool to have a mini workout session. The workout session was directed by the L’il Critters bears and by Steve Ettinger, C.S.C.S.

lilcritters

It was good to learn that there are other options for kids to get their daily needs of vitamins. They also have different options, from multivitamins to Omega-3. They are also gummies which makes kids love them. Usually gummy vitamins have artificial coloring but L’il Critters have no artificial dyes or hugh fructose corn syrup. This makes for a healthier choice. My kids were hooked on the vitamins, to the extent of asking for them every morning!

lilcritters

We also got a peek of the new book by Steve Ettinger, Wallie Exercises. The story, geared towards kids, is the story of Wallie who is a lazy dog that doesn’t like to exercise. Through the book the dog learns to work out and in the end there is a list of exercises. The exercises at the end are for the kids to do to stay healthy.

lilcritters

I enjoyed my time. And now is the best time to get kids to take their vitamins, not only because the changes in climate (colder in CA than NY during Christmas= tons of sick children everywhere), but because childhood is the start of a healthier lifestyle. Is up to us as parents to get kids excited about exercise and health and food. Vitamins are a great way to add that extra needs to their bodies. Also if the vitamins are gummy delicious it’s a win- win!

Do you give your kids vitamins?

Special gifts from The New York Times Store

Published by:

IMG_3858It’s the Holidays, and for me they don’t end until mid January. I am Puerto Rican so the party keeps going after New Years and Three Kings Day. So we definitely hit a lot of parties. It’s always hard to find the perfect gift for your hostess or that special person who’s hard to gift. You know the one I’m talking about. The wine expert who has everything! Well I discovered the perfect gift for them. A Wine and Champagne Bucket from The New York Times Store. They have a huge selection of personalized gifts. I loved that the cooler fits more than one bottle at a time.NYTWINE2

I had our wine bucket for Christmas Eve and everyone was admiring. It really works as a centerpiece item in your table because of the stylish look. It even has small handles to make it easy to carry. You can personalize it with a name, year and city. I picked our wedding year since it’s the year our family started. I did like that it also came with a times keepsake of 1933 where they informed about the repeal of the prohibition. I do wish the cooler was insulated inside to avoid sweating on the outside. Kind of like hotel room ice buckets. But overall really happy with the cooler.

And don’t worry. You love the bucket but don’t know anyone that drinks? This is a multitasking gift. You can use it as a planter for that special touch on a flower arrangement. I really love double duty items. Plus, because of its personalization it makes it a more intimate gift sure to charm that hard to please person. The New York Times Store also has a bunch of other items that you can customize for yourself or anyone else. Remember the Holiday are not over yet and Valentine’s Day is around the corner!

Jeep Brand Scout Stroller

Published by:

Jeep Stroller

This Jeep Brand Scout Umbrella Stroller is seriously the best value for stroller I’ve seen in a very long time. This stroller has a lot of features that provide convenience for the child and the parent. The stroller is available at Walmart and comes in two colors pink and teal. I received the teal for a review and i was so impressed. At first, I was skeptical of a stroller that was so affordable, but I know it’s by Delta and I love their quality. Delta is known for their high safety standards.

Jeep Stroller

When I opened the stroller, I put it together. It came with the cup holder and rain cover. The stroller is an umbrella type and very light, which is perfect for quick runs to the store and in and out the car. I’ve used it more for school drop off and pick ups because it handles the city terrain pretty well.

Key features to notice:

~Double wheels in all 4 wheels

~Double break

~3 recline position

~Foot closure

~Multiple positions in handles

~Peek a boo window

~45lb weight limit

Another feature I really liked was the tall canopy that fits all 3 of my kids and doesn’t rub off their heads and it also reclines so the kids can be comfortable. The harness is also padded. I only have two things I would change and they are the weight limit I wish was 50lbs and I wish the peek a boo window had a magnet and not apex. But like I mentioned before, for the price this is seriously a winning stroller.

Not only was I impressed with the quality and sturdiness of this stroller, I was also impressed with the performance. I took it to the farm, and around the city and the double tires really help the stroller maneuver beautifully. The positioning of the handles was also amazing since I am much shorter than my husband, so we were both able to make it suit our height better. It has a straight compact fold with fits anywhere. I do wish it had a carry handle.

Jeep Delta

All in all for less $80 this stroller is 5 stars. And you can rest easy knowing that the company behind it, Delta, puts extra care into their products, making it an even more valuable stroller. This is a keeper for me and compared to some of the $200 strollers this one really stands out.

Would you try a stroller for this price?

Stepping in Style with Stride Rite

Published by:

It is no secret we are HUGE fans of Stride Rite. 99% of all the shoes my kids own have been bought at Stride Rite stores. If you didn’t know they do sell a lot of other brands including Sperry, Saucony, Robeez and UGGS! Although they do sell other brands and we have bought some of the other brands once in a while, I actually really love the Stride Rite brand. Their shoes have survived my 2 boys so I know the quality is worth the price. Needless to say I was more than ecstatic for the opportunity to work with them and review their new line of shoes called Made 2 Play. The main difference about this line is that the shoes are 100% machine washable. For a mom, this is incredible. Think about all those dirty shoes you have to sponge clean or just toss! These are quality shoes that withstand children, but you can put them in the machine and call it a day!

The Serena Sneaker

The Ian Sneaker

The Ian Sneaker

I received two pairs to review. The first style was Ian sneaker in size 13 for my first-born. These are his everyday school shoes. They look nice, they feel like sneakers and they are “made 2 play”. I also got a pair for Grace, which I got in a size 8.5 called the Serena sneaker. If you don’t know what size your child is, get them measured. We go to Stride Rite stores 3x a time just to get measure and make sure we are wearing the right size shoes. And you can get them measured for free. So with my first one, he was measuring 12 so I got the shoes 1 whole size up, the same with Grace. They usually recommend half a size, but I have 3 kids that need shoes and I need them to last just a bit longer. The shoes also come with memory foam inside, which makes them extra comfortable for kids to enjoy. Sometimes we worry about what our kids look like and forget the simple things, like: do their shoes fit the right way. And most of Stride Rite shoes come with velcro, which is a win-win because it’s easy on- easy off.Stride Rite4I appreciate the fit of Stride Rite shoes. And most of their shoes range from $44.00-$49.00 (for the Made 2 Play). If you are not familiar with the brand though, they have tons of sale, right now they have some of the Made 2 Play shoes for $24.99, but they are also offering 25% off if you donate an old pair of shoes for Soles 4 Souls. My favorite sale of the year is the buy one get one 40%. Because I’m always buying multiple shoes, this is a great money-saving sale. With Stride Rite you have tons of options, they also have an outlet store as well as a rewards program.StrideRite5

Are your kids picky with their shoes? Mine certainly are. If they don’t have comfortable shoes they refuse to leave the house!
